Two Constables sentenced to 15 years for Hillbrow murder and attempted murder
The Palmridge High Court today sentenced two Constables to 15 years for Murder, 7 years for attempted murder, 5 years for another count of attempted murder and 2 years for malicious injury to property. The sentences are to run concurrently. They were both declared unfit to possess firearms. The accused were convicted of the aforesaid offences on 5 August 2016.
The Constables are 29 year old Mmereki Welcome Mathekga and 34 year old Thulani Johannes Mngomezulu, both based at Jeppe SAPS. They are still in the employ of the SAPS.
It is alleged that on 14 January 2013, members of Jeppe SAPS received information from radio control requesting backup in connection with a shooting. It was reported that the police were pursuing a one suspect who had shot at him. He indicated on the radio that he had been shot by one black male and that two of his colleagues from Hillbrow (in plain clothes) were chasing the suspect. SAPS members from Jeppe SAPS responded.
On arrival at the scene they shot and killed one member of SAPS who was pursuing the suspect and injured another. The suspect who was being pursued got away as a result.
The suspects alleged that they were shot at by the plainclothes policemen, however, witnesses reported that the members who were shot did not have firearms and did not pose any danger to the police who shot them.
The IPID investigated the shooting and recommended prosecution f the two Constables. The accused were convicted on 05 August 2016.
