MEDIA STATEMENT

3 MARCH 2000

I wish to place on record that the ICD is greatly encouraged by the statements made by National Commissioner Jackie Selebi of the South African Police Service that corrupt police officials will not be tolerated within the service and that they will be "rooted out" from it.

It is noted that concern has been expressed in some quarters about the last aspect of Commissioner Selebi’s statement. Our research has revealed that several of the Australian States have employed a strategy of ridding their police forces of corrupt officers, rather than concentrating on lengthy and uncertain prosecutions, to great effect. The Police Integrity Commission of New South Wales has had considerable success in this regard.

The implementation of a similar, radical approach in South Africa is long overdue. The ICD pledges its support to SAPS in this endeavor.
