MEDIA STATEMENT

1 September 2000

Minister of Safety and Security Steve Tshwete has announced the appointment of Advocate Karen D McKenzie as the new Executive Director of the ICD with effect from 1 September 2000. She succeeds Adv. Neville Melville who resigned in April 2000 to take up the position of Banking Adjudicator in South Africa. Since May 2000 Adv. McKenzie has been acting Executive Director.

Prior to ther appiontment as Acting Executive Director, Adv. McKenzie was the Director for Monitoring and Development in the ICD for over a year, having transferred from the Department of Justice.

Advocate McKenzie graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1988 and Bachelor of Laws (LLB) in 1991 both from the University of the Western Cape. She was admitted as advocate in December 1992 and practiced up until 1997.
