MEDIA STATEMENT

29 March 2001

The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) wishes to inform that Sergeant MZ Gololo, charged with the murder of his wife, in July 2000, was found guilty and convicted in the Johannesburg High Court, on 23 March 2001.

The ICD investigated this incident.

Sgt. Gololo was convicted on one count of murder, one count of pointing a fire arm and 2 counts of intimidations. He was sentenced on 28 March 2001 to 20 years, 18 months and 10 years of imprisonment respectively. The prison terms will run concurrently and he will serve an effective 20 years' imprisonment.

It has been alleged that the deceased wife of Sgt. Gololo had reported domestic violence abuses to the Station Commissioner of the Olifantsfontein Police Station, where Sgt. Gololo was stationed before joining the Midrand Police Station. Evidence was led during the trial that there was a history of physical abuse during the marriage of the Gololo's.

The deceased wife was killed with the service fire arm of Sgt. Gololo.
