MEDIA STATEMENT

17 October 2001

The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) wishes to inform that Constable Thandanani Erik Manzi (32), charged with the murder of his wife Emily Manzi (32), in January 2000, was found guilty and convicted in the Durban High Court, on 12 October 2001.

The incident occurred in Groutville in Kwazulu-Natal on 20 January 2000 where Const Manzi killed his wife by shooting her four times. At the time of the shooting Const Manzi and his deceased wife visited his brother, Insp Manzi, with the intention of seeking intervention in their marital problems. Const Manzi alleged that his wife was involved in an extra marital relationship before killing her.

The ICD took charge of the investigation immediately and after finalization thereof forwarded the case docket to the DPP with recommendations that the suspect be indicted for murder. The DPP concurred with the ICD’s recommendations and prosecuted Const Manzi accordingly.

Const Manzi was convicted of murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition and sentenced on 12 October 2001 to 20 years’ imprisonment.

The deceased wife was killed with the service firearm of Const Manzi’s brother, Insp Manzi, who is also a police officer.

The Executive Director of the ICD, Adv Karen McKenzie said "More and more we are faced with the investigation of these femicide cases, where policemen kill their wives or partners and more often than not a history of domestic violence and spousal abuse precedes these killings. If police management does not intervene with a turnaround strategy for gender attitudes, then police implementation of the Domestic Violence Act will remain cause for concern".
