MEDIA STATEMENT

20 September 2001

The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) wishes to inform that Sergeant Phillip Mokgoro, charged with the murder of his wife, in May 2000, was found guilty and convicted in the Tzaneen High Court, on 19 September 2001.

The incident occurred in Kgapane in the Northern Province on Sunday,14 September 2000 where it is alleged that Sgt Mokgoro killed his wife and put her in the sewerage after spending a night with her in their bedroom while dead.

The ICD took charge of the investigation immediately and after finalization thereof handed over the case docket to the DPP with recommendations that the suspect be indicted for murder. The DPP concurred with the ICD’s recommendations and prosecuted Sgt Mokgoro accordingly.

Sgt. Mokgoro was convicted on murder on 18 September and sentenced on 19 September 2001 to 15 years of imprisonment.

It has been alleged that the deceased wife of Sgt. Gololo had reported domestic violence abuses to the Station Commissioner of the Olifantsfontein Police Station, where Sgt. Gololo was stationed before joining the Midrand Police Station. Evidence was led during the trial that there was a history of physical abuse during the marriage of the Gololo's.

The deceased wife was killed with the service firearm of Sgt. Gololo.
