07 FEBRUARY 2001 We wish to inform that we have almost finalized investigations into circumstances surrounding the death of Thokozani Nhlapho. The incident occurred in Newcastle on 24 January 2001 after two members of the Newcastle Dog Unit had arrested a man for urinating in public at the Newcastle taxi rank. The police alleged that the crowd at the scene got unruly and began throwing stones and bottles at the police. It was also alleged that Mr Nhlapho who had allegedly been part of the unruly group, produced a firearm and fired at the police. Our preliminary investigation has revealed that, a police dog was set upon Mr Nhlapho and he was fatally shot by members of the Newcastle Dog Unit. Our investigation has also revealed that there were neither stones nor bottles thrown by members of the public. Mr Nhlapho was not armed. The case docket will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for a decision as to prosecute or not. We wish to reiterate that we are concerned about the escalating complaints implicating members of police Dog Units. Contact Person: |
