26 December 2001 The ICD is investigating circumstances surrounding the death of Mr Mothobi Morudu on 24 December 2001. The incident occurred in Seshego in the Northern Province on Monday, 24 December 2001 where Inspector Duba killed Mr Morudu by shooting him fatally. Insp Duba went to Mr Morudu’s house where he broke the window of the bathroom where the deceased was hiding and started shooting at him. It is alleged that the deceased tried to escape but the suspect police officer went to the kitchen door and continued with his shooting spree which led to the death of Mr Morudu. Insp Duba who was stationed at the Pietersburg Criminal Record Centre alleged that Mr Morudu, who was married, was involved in a relationship with his (Insp Duba’s) girlfriend. The suspect police officer was arrested and detained at the Seshego police station after handing himself over to the police and will be appearing in the Seshego Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 27 December 2001. The deceased was killed with the service firearm of Insp Duba. The ICD took over the case docket immediately and after finalisation will be forwarding same to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for a decision on prosecution. The Executive Director of the Independent Complaints Directorate, Adv Karen McKenzie said: "The ICD strongly condemns the recent spate of killings by police officers, with their service firearms. It appears as though police officers are resolving conflict by whipping out their firearms and shooting the alleged ‘source’ of the conflict".
