The Siyabuswa Regional Court has found a member of the SAPS Crime Prevention Unit based at Siyabuswa Police Station guilty of culpable homicide following the death of Sgt Mphutlha who was also based at the same police station. The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) had made a recommendation to the Director of Public Prosecutions that the suspect be charged with culpable homicide following the incident.

Inspector Mdlamlenze was found guilty of shooting Sgt Mputlha to death during an incident which happened in September 1999. The ICD immediately took over the investigation and recommended to the DPP that Inspector Mdlamlenze be charged with culpable homicide.

He was convicted and sentenced to 18 months imprisonment or a fine of R 8000.00 plus a further three years suspended prison sentence.
