MEDIA STATEMENT

13 February 2002

The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) wishes to inform that one of its investigators was arrested for allegedly selling a case docket to a suspect police officer, in a murder case.

The incident occurred in KwaZulu Natal where it is alleged that an ICD investigator, based in the ICD KwaZulu Natal Office removed a murder case docket without any knowledge or permission of the Acting Provincial Head and he allegedly sold the case docket to the suspect police officer and claimed that the docket was lost.

The suspect ICD investigator was instructed to open a backup docket and we immediately conducted our own investigation into circumstances surrounding the loss of the said case docket. After our investigation we informed the SAPS Anti-Corruption Unit and a warrant of arrest was issued and effected on 12 February 2002.

The Executive Director of the ICD, Adv Karen McKenzie said: " We are committed to clean governance. Where there is corruption it will be exposed. Corruption will be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law. As much as we do not tolerate any involvement of police in criminality, our personnel are no exception. Corruption and misconduct will be rooted out from my department, wherever it may exist."
