6 October 2002 The Executive Director of the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD), Adv Karen McKenzie, will be visiting the Mecklenburg community at the start of government's Imbizo Focus Week, in the Limpopo Province on Monday, 07 October 2002. Adv. McKenzie will then proceed to the Malamulele community in the aforesaid Province on Tuesday, 08 October 2002 and on 10 October 2002 will visit the Douglas community in the Northern Cape Province, while her final visit will be to Jan Kempdorp in the same province on Friday, 11 October 2002. Among complaints received from the Mecklenburg community are complaints relating to service delivery and there is also an increased reporting of deaths in police custody and as a result of police action. In Malamulele the community also have a problem with service delivery of the SAPS, as well as misconduct. In Douglas and Jan Kempdorp the community is experiencing problems in that police seem to be reluctant to attend to their complaints against Whites in those areas. There are allegations that Whites are given preferential treatment since they are not arrested when cases are reported against them. There are also racially motivated incidents reported, for example people are being assaulted and insulted for no apparent reasons, by White police officers. The Executive Director will lead the ICD delegation with the intention of interacting with, listening to and registering complaints from members of the community alleging police misconduct and criminality. These visits will bring into prominence the ICD's involvement and commitment to Government's Imbizo Focus Week (07-13 October 2002). Schedule
