MEDIA STATEMENT

19 January 2002

The Independent Complaints Directorate wishes to inform that it is supervising the SAPS investigation into circumstances surrounding an incident where a police officer aided an awaiting trial prisoner to escape on 04 November 2001. The escapee was charged with an array of criminal offences including murder, robbery, attempted murder. He is also alleged to be a member of Mapogo a Mathamaga. The escapee was rearrested in January 2002.

The SAPS Nelspruit has since opened a docket of aiding a prisoner to escape and corruption against the suspect police officer. The escapee alleges that he paid the suspect officer for his release.

The ICD is supervising the criminal investigation, meanwhile a recommendation for the suspect member’s suspension was made by ourselves, to the Area Commissioners: Lowveld, Nelspruit, on 05 November 2001. We have only now been advised that the member has been served with a notice of possible suspension.

It is also important to mention that the ICD earlier recommended to SAPS management that the same suspect police officer be suspended for aiding prisoners to escape on two previous occasions. The departmental action in connection with the aforesaid cases is still pending.
