MEDIA STATEMENT

8 January 2003

The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) wishes to inform that it is investigating circumstances surrounding the death of Bushy Mabulana, 24 years of age, on 07 January 2003.

The incident occurred in Elandskraal in the Limpopo Province on Tuesday, 07 January 2003, where it is alleged that two police officers stationed at SAPS Elandskraal wanted to arrest Mr Mabulana after suspecting him of being involved in the house breaking and robbery. It is alleged that police approached Mr Mabulana who was in the company of a group of boys at the shopping complex in the said area. The deceased tried to runaway and the police shot him on the back and died on his way to the Tsimanyana Hospital. A postmortem will be conducted on Friday, 10 January 2003 at Lebowa-Kgomo government mortuary.

Our preliminary investigation revealed that Mr Mabulana was a key witness in the death of his friend, Titus Makopo (24) on 16 June 2002 who was allegedly killed by a police officer from the same police station. It is alleged that Mr Makopo was a suspect in a house breaking and robbery.

We have taken over the case docket and our investigation continues.
