MEDIA STATEMENT

25 April 2003

Executive Director of the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD), Adv Karen McKenzie, will be launching a research report on excessive use of force or violence by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) on Tuesday, 29 April 2003, in Pretoria, in the CSIR Conference Centre at 9H00.

The research project commissioned by the ICD, was conducted by the Institute for Human Rights & Criminal Justice Studies at the Technikon SA. The purpose of the aforementioned research was to examine the use of force or violence by members of SAPS in seven policing areas in Gauteng Province. The aim was to develop an offender profile as well as establish trends and patterns in the use of force and develop recommendations on remedial strategies.

The Minister for Safety and Security, Charles Nqakula, will open the workshop. The Gauteng MEC for Safety and Liaison, Nomvula Mokonyane, and National Commissioner of the SAPS, Jackie Selebi, will also address the workshop. Provincial Commissioner, Perumal Naidoo, will also be in attendance.
