Media Statement 5 May 2004
The Independent Complaints Directorate wishes to inform that it is investigating circumstances surrounding an incident where police officers allegedly shot at five civilians on 03 May 2004. The incident occurred at the Marike Taxi Rank in Calcutta in Limpopo Province where it is alleged that three police officers stationed at SAPS Calcutta were searching for suspects wanted for numerous criminal activities. It is alleged that the said officers without any warning started shooting at a vehicle with five occupants, three managed to flee while two were fatally wounded. Ms Millicent Lincoln (25) and Mr Tsakane Nkuna (24) died at the scene of crime. During our preliminary investigation it was discovered that the five civilians were wrongly identified since they were not linked to the wanted suspects. The ICD took over the case docket. After completion of the investigation the case docket will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) with recommendations. Our investigation continues. The post-mortem will be held on Friday, 07 May 2004, at the Polokwane Government Mortuary.
