ICD arrests Senior police officer for corruption

Media Statement

12 July 2004

The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) has arrested a Senior Police Officer for alleged corrupt practices. The officer appeared in the Polokwane Magistrates' Court today, 12 July 2004.

The incident occurred in the Limpopo Province on 07 July 2004, where it is alleged that a police officer, stationed at the Provincial Commissioner's office, used SAPS vouchers to pay for tollgate fees, driving his private vehicle to Pretoria. Allegedly the said police officer provided the registration number of a state vehicle parked at his office, in Limpopo, as the vehicle for which toll fees were being paid.

Our preliminary investigation revealed that the officer was granted leave for only 08 and 09 July 2004. He did not report for duty on 07 July 2004.

The ICD took charge of the investigation immediately and arrested the officer on Monday, 12 July 2004. He appeared on the same day at the Polokwane Magistrates' Court for a bail application. Bail was granted in the amount of R 1000 and the case was postponed for further investigation. The next court appearance will be on 02 August 2004 at the Mokopane Magistrates' Court.

The investigation continues.
