Media Statement 1 April 2004
The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) wishes to inform that it is investigating circumstances surrounding the death of David Ndlovu on 31 April 2004. The incident occurred at Pholosong Hospital in Tsakane in the Gauteng Province on Friday, 31 April 2004, where it is alleged that police arrested David Ndlovu on 20 March 2004 after suspecting him of being involved in the Arm robbery. He was taken to Tsakane Police Station and appeared in Brakpan Magistrate's Court on 23 March 2004 and remanded in custody for a scheduled date, subsequently he was taken to Brakpan Police Station and reportedly he was booked in police cells with visible head injuries. While in police custody he started to vomit and allegedly complained of pains and he was taken to Pholosong Hospital. David Ndlovu died while in hospital on 31 March 2004 and the postmortem was conducted on Today, 01 April 2004. The ICD took over the case docket today, on 01 April 2004. Our investigation continues.
