Police officer arrested for corrupt practices

Media Alert

3 November 2004

The incident occurred in the KwaZulu-Natal in September 2004, where it is alleged that a police officer, stationed at the Bay View police station, solicited a bribe from a suspect who was appearing in the Chatsworth Magistrates' Court for possession of mandrax, for the purpose of painting the evidence presented in court.

As a result of the information received from the complainant, the ICD conducted an operation which led to the arrest of an attorney based in Chatsworth and the said officer.

The ICD took charge of the investigation immediately and arrested both suspects on Wednesday, 3 November 2004. The two suspects who are currently in police custody will appear on Thursday, 4 November 2004 at the Durban Magistrates' Court for a bail application.

The investigation continues.
