The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) wishes to inform that it is investigating circumstances surrounding the death of Lazarus Mojaki Mogorosi (45) on 21 May 2004. The incident occurred in SAPS Mabatho in the North West Province on Friday, 21 May 2004, where Mr Mogorosi was found dead in his cell after he was arrested on 08 May 2004 for an alleged attempted rape. It is alleged that Mr Mogorosi who was reported to be mentally disturbed hit himself against objects in the cell and as such he inflicted injuries unto himself. Since there is a suspicion that he might have been assaulted by his fellow inmates, another case is being investigated by SAPS Mabatho against inmates. The ICD took over the case docket immediately. We are also investigating a case of possible negligence of duties against SAPS members for not taking the deceased to hospital timously. A postmortem was conducted on 24 May 2004, an official report is awaited. Our investigation continues. Steve Mabona
