Media Statement 6 July 2004
The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) wishes to inform that a police officer who allegedly shot at his neighbour, Machupe Mphahlele (40) and fatally wounded him, will appear in Lebowakgomo Magistrate's Court on Friday, 16 July 2004. The incident occurred in Lebowakgomo in the Limpopo Province on Tuesday, 15 June 2004, where it is alleged that Inspector Nkoane Samuel Mphahlele (39), stationed at the Mahwelereng police station fatally shot Machube Mphahlele for no apparent reason. Inspector Mphahlele was off duty at his house, having drinks with Machube Mphahlele, his neighbour. It is alleged that Inspector Mphahlele went to his bedroom and came back holding a firearm. He allegedly shot at the deceased once, on his forehead. Our preliminary investigation revealed that Insp Mphahlele was previously involved in criminal activities and he was also charged for misconduct on several occasions. Inspector Mphahlele's service pistol was used to shoot the deceased. The ICD took over the case docket immediately and arrested Insp Mphahlele. He appeared on Monday, 28 June 2004 at the Lebowakgomo Magistrate's Court for a bail application. Bail was denied and the case was postponed for further investigation. The next appearance will be on 16 July 2004. The postmortem was conducted on Friday, 18 June 2004 at the Lebowakgomo Government Mortuary. The investigation continues. Steve Mabona
