| Media Statement The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) wishes to inform that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has decided to prosecute two suspect police officers for their involvement into allegations of corruption at the Kensington Police Station. In May 2005, we were handed a video footage of police officers partying with known and notorious gang personalities. On the same day we were also approached by a witness who made numerous allegations of corruption against members of the Kensington Police Station. Our Investigations against the said officers were completed in July 2005 and the case dockets were forwarded to the DPP for a decision on prosecution. The DPP concurred with our recommendations and decided to charge two (2) suspect police officers with corruption accordingly. However we still await a decision on prosecution of the other four (4) suspect police officers. The trial of Inspector Sydney Simpson is scheduled for 02 - 05 May 2006 and 22 – 26 May 2006 at the Cape Town Magistrates' Court, while the trial date for the second suspect police officer will be announced in due course. It is alleged that Insp Simpson accepted a bribe of about R1, 500 and as such submitted a false statement in favour of a suspect in an armed robbery case during the bail application of the said suspect. The second suspect police officer submitted a false statement for the release of two suspects in an armed robbery and attempted murder cases, he allegedly lied which resulted to the failure to effect an arrest of another armed robber suspect.
