ICD on sentencing of police official for alleged murder

Media Statement

04 July 2006

The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) wishes to inform that Inspector William Matlonya (48) who was stationed at SAPS Maleboho, Limpopo , was convicted of murder in the Lebowakgomo Magistrates' Court on Monday, 03 July 2006 .

The incident which claimed the life of his wife, Patricia Matlonya (43) occurred in February 2004 at Lebowakgomo. It is alleged that Insp Matlonya stabbed his wife several times with a knife after accusing her of being involved in a love affair with another man. The victim was taken to Lebowakgomo hospital where she later died. It is further alleged that the accused handed himself to the police on the same day of the incident. Insp Matlonya has since been dismissed from the SAPS.

The ICD immediately took charge of the investigation and on finalization thereof, forwarded the case docket to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) with a recommendation that Insp Matlonya be prosecuted for murder. The DPP accepted our recommendation.

The ICD managed to successfully oppose the bail application of Insp Matlonya, and he remained in custody until his conviction and sentencing.

On Monday, 03 July 2006, the Lebowakgomo Magistrates' Court, Limpopo, convicted Insp Matlonya of murder and sentenced him to 15 years' imprisonment.

The ICD wishes to reiterate that any involvement of police officers in unlawful behaviour will not be tolerated.
