On 29 May 2008, Inspector F Molete who is attached to the Visible Police section of Kagisho Police Station in Galeshewe, Kimberly and the victim, Inspector Johannes Makame travelled together to the accused residence in a state vehicle. It is then alleged that upon arrival the Inspector took the vehicle’s keys from the victim and refused to hand them back. It is suspected that there was a dispute about money owed to the accused by the victim although these claims could not be substantiated.
The victim then alerted his immediate commander and together with other SAPS members went to the accused residence to obtain the keys. It is alleged that the accused came up the street and without commenting went to the garage where his car was parked and removed a pick handle from the boot of his vehicle. It is further alleged that he then proceeded straight to the victim and hit him on the head with the pick handle. The victim was rushed to hospital after sustaining serious head injuries. The accused was not apprehended by his police colleagues at the scene and was allowed back to his house.
Upon receipt of the complaint the ICD moved swiftly to detain the accused on 03 June 2008 at 09:00 at his residence and place him before court in Kimberly the same date. The matter was remanded to allow investigators to obtain statements from 4 witnesses and a decision on further prosecution from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP). The accused was granted bail of R500-00 by the court. The ICD did not oppose the bail.
