Media Statement

7 May 2008

The ICD is currently investigating a shooting incident in Tubatse, Limpopo that happened on Sunday, 20 April 2008. It is alleged that at about 02h00 the Tubatse Police Station received a call from one of their members, a Constable Sekwadi. He informed them that he found an unknown African male in his house in the process of stealing personal belongings. A fight ensued between the Constable and the suspect until SAPS members from Tubatse arrived. It is alleged that the SAPS officials apprehended the suspect and took him to Tubatse Police Station for questioning. Upon arrival at the station one police official went out of the van and marched to the Community Service Centre to get leg cuffs to use on the suspect because he was violent. One police official remained in the van with the suspect.

It is further alleged that, while still waiting for the cuffs, Constable Sekwadi arrived at the police station. He found the suspect in the police van and he shot him in the leg while still inside the van.  He was immediately arrested after this incident. He appeared before the Tubatse Magistrate Court on Monday, 21 April 2008 and was granted bail of R2000. The case has been postponed to 30 May 2008. The investigation is continuing.
