MEDIA STATEMENT

03 February 2010

The ICD is investigating a case of murder against 43 year old sergeant M.A Motaung who is based at Phuthaditjhaba SAPS. It is alleged that he murdered his 36 year old mistress whose identity is yet unknown. The incident took place at the policeman’s home on 01 February 2010 in Clubview, Phuthaditjhaba.

It is alleged that on the date of the incident, the suspect’s child arrived home from school and saw a foot protruding under the bed. She then contacted her mother who, upon arrival, found the deceased already dead. The deceased’s face was covered with a plastic bag. Police were called and the suspect, Sergeant Motaung was arrested. The ICD is investigating a possible charge of murder.

A post-mortem will be held in Bloemfontein tomorrow on 4 February 2010. The suspect officer appeared at the Makwane Magistrates Court today and has been remanded in custody until 11 February 2010 for a formal bail application. The ICD will oppose bail.
