CHARGES WITHDRAWN AGAINST TWO ACCUSED IN SANDTON RAPE THAT TOOK PLACE IN DECEMBER 2011

Media Statement
PRETORIA 16 March 2012

The ICD has been informed by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) that charges have been withdrawn against the two (2) policemen accused of raping two sisters in Sandton on 02 December 2011.

At the time, it was alleged that the sisters were raped at different scenes by the same policemen who had searched them at the complex where one of the sisters resides. The ICD took over the investigation against the policemen and collected all the evidence relating to this matter.

The policemen were arrested on the strength of the seriousness of the allegations after consultation with the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The investigation has since revealed the following:

  • The policemen arrested were not placed at the scene by the AVL (tracking) reports. It was confirmed that the suspects did stop the victims at the complex and there is also a witness to that effect, but the suspects were not placed at the scenes of the rape incidents;

  • Blood was drawn from the suspects for DNA analysis with the samples taken from the victims. No male DNA was found which then excludes the policemen as suspects; and

  • The victim in whose car the sisters were driving was asked to provide a vehicle tracking report to assist the investigation - this report has not been submitted to the investigators.

The ICD calls on anyone with new information to come forward to shed light on this horrific incident.
